SUMMARY WRITING - WRITING AT UNIVERSITY BY CREME & LEA (PAGE 82-85)
After discussing how many and how important the writing structure is, I realized that writing is more challenging than I thought before. Many parts that I have to pay attention and unknowingly they can affect my writing.
In this summary, after reading ‘Writing At University’ by Creme & Lea page 82-85, I will talk about a part of writing that always come along in my assignment. This section determines whether a piece of writing can be said to be good and reliable or vice versa. The part’s name is ARGUMENT.
In academic writing, it is well known that each writer has to have a good and strong argument. Building a central idea for your writing first may be the best way to start. It helps you to determine what are going to talk about and focus on it. As we know that a paragraph consists of a central idea that is called a topic sentence and several supporting sentences. Don’t forget to support your paragraph with examples or pieces of evidence of your topic and a conclusion at the end.
Besides building a central idea as a start to make an argument, you can also construct it by imagining the issue as it’s yours. Creme & Lea in their book said that it may seem not formal but that way can help you to feel and be able to make your own view of the issue. Your sense will unfold the issue step by step and you gonna find the ideas that are linked together so that you can make up your argument.
Once you can construct the argument, you should be aware of how to put it together. Don’t make the reader confused about which side you are presenting or arguing! It is often not easy to formulate the idea and put it together with the supporting details, but take your time.
After concerning how an argument affects the development of the central idea, you should know there is a topic and theme that is a brick of your writing. These two parts help the writer to support the central idea and argument completely. For example, the writer has chosen some topics: Covid-19; Poorness; Stupidity; Death. From these topics, the writer developed one of his main themes: ‘High rate of poorness is caused by Covid-19’. The writer used this along with other relevant themes to develop his central idea that ‘Covid-19 is a big disaster for humans’. The writer begins to develop the argument. Firstly, the argument may seem to not exist but it gives voice to the central idea and it will be more developed along the writing process.
